The capture pane improves

Another day another incremental improvement to Traskpro! Todays development efforts focused on improving the capture pane with the long term goal of replacing the task input bar at the top of the page. While it’s not as omnipresent as the input bar the capture pane is significantly more powerful - particularly when several tasks with identical tags need to be entered at once.

Capture pane
The new pane combines a cleaner and more unified user experience with features implemented in the last week. The ability to enter a due date and task notes (which are applied to all tasks entered in the batch) removes steps from the Traskpro workflow and allows quick yet powerful task entry. By not forcing the editing of a task to enter a due date or notes fewer actions are required.

A few quick things

Today bought a wave of due-date feedback and filed bugs. Tonight brought the fixing of the bugs and two new minor features for the due dates on tasks:

  • Tasks due today will report as “due today” rather than needlessly repeating the date
  • Due dates can now be cleared - enter “none” for the due date to clear a previously entered one

Due date feature evolving

In Traskpro’s spirit of rapid development and productivity the due date functionality announced yesterday has improved already. Traskpro now allows users to not only set and see a due date for tasks, but also to clearly differentiate past due tasks and view tasks sorted by due date.

The first feature will color the due date of any tasks due today or past due in bright red. This helps to visually distinguish them from upcoming tasks and help draw a users eye to them when scanning over the tasks for a given tag context. The red color for due tasks occurs site-wide.

Special TagsTo help integrate the due date feature the ’special tags’ section of the right hand sidebar has been re-organized. The new layout provides access to the three new context views: past due tags, tags with a due date, and tags without a due date. These new views can provide a top-down view of either all tasks which have a set due date, or perhaps more importantly a view of all active tasks due either today or in the past.

Still coming are a few additional views for due dates. One of the top priority features site-wide is the ability to modify the sort order of tasks from the current priority sorting to priority, alphanumeric, task created, or task due date. Once this feature has been implemented viewing tasks sorted by their due date will be possible from within any tag context view.

As always if you have feedback on this or other features please send Traskpro an email or leave a comment on this post.

Experimenting with AdSense

As Traskpro’s user base grows the question of monetization has arisen. In the past we have had great success with AdSense and are experimenting with it here in order to keep Traskpro a free service forever.

AdSense is added on a per-user basis with all new users having AdSense advertisements turned on. Valued members of the Traskpro community will have opportunities to have ads removed from their account. To have ads removed from your account send us an email with feedback - any users sending in usable feedback or who otherwise help to make Traskpro better will also have the advertisements immediately and permanently removed.

On the topic of making Traskpro better we are seeking a Graphic Designer or other UI specialist for an upcoming user interface redesign code named ‘aeron’. Send us email if you or someone you know might be interested in helping out. Stay tuned for more details.

A quick note - Traskpro values your privacy and has taken special measures to keep your task data safe and private. A system has been developed to allow the AdSense crawler to see aggregate tag information to allow for targeting while not providing user-specific data or personal information to 3rd parties.

Due dates for tasks

Traskpro is pleased to announce an often requested feature has been implemented: due dates for tasks. Currently the feature allows for a date to be set and displayed. Coming soon will be a variety of date based views and ways to see upcoming due dates and past due tasks within the context of your choice.

Due dates

To add a due date for a task simply click the edit button and enter a due date into the newly provided field. The due date formatting is very flexible thanks to PHP’s strtotime() function. Here are a few examples of ways to enter a due date for a task:
  • 10 September 2008 or 9/10 or 9/10/08
  • tomorrow or +1 day
  • next week or +1 week or +7 days
  • next Thursday
  • next month or August

As always leave a comment on this post to provide feedback on the feature or suggestions for future date based functionality within Traskpro.
